CHAPTER 12

The silence between Phoenix and I is deafening. I wish there were something I could say or do to ease her mind. We have never sat this quietly before. I watch her, intently, as she picks at her dinner across the table.

“Would you like a glass of wine, Phoenix?” I say, trying to start some conversation.

“Sure,” she says blandly.

I know I shouldn’t expect too much out of her today, as I know she is feeling pretty awful. I would be mad at me if I were her, but she seems to handle everything better than I ever could. Phoenix likes to stuff things down inside and mull them over. She doesn’t talk about it unless she needs to. I try to give her space when it gets like this. But, after last night, I am hoping this doesn’t put a wedge between us.

I pour her a glass of wine and place it next to her plate. I bend down and put my hand on her knee. “I’m sorry Phoenix,” I say regretfully. It seems we will never be left with any peace. I fear what this mass of things is going to do to our relationship. I would like to think our relationship is strong enough to endure, but I don’t know how much Phoenix will be able to take.

She reaches down and cups her hand around my cheek. The warmth of her skin makes my body tingle. “We are going to get through this Elias. I just wish I could talk to that evil brother of yours. Maybe we could come to an agreement.”

“That is not a good idea, Phee. You don’t know him. He is not a nice guy, trust me.” I think about all the women I have seen him drain and leave behind, their families never understanding. I wonder how many more he had done this way since we last departed.

“That is where you are wrong, Elias. I have met him, and he didn’t try to rip my throat out. He was calm and collected.”

“He was toying with you Phoenix!” my voice comes out louder than I expected, and she winces.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to yell. But you saying things like this means you don’t quite understand how grave the situation is for you.”

“It seems to me if he wanted me dead, he would have already done it, Elias. Maybe we could talk to him. Isn’t that a better option than him feeding on all of Neilson Mandela High as well as my parents?” she says, frankly.

“I understand your point, Phee. If it were that easy though, we obviously wouldn’t have had to take such serious actions over it.”

She nods her head, but I can see she is not convinced. This is a recipe for disaster. I know she would give her life before she would let anything happen to the people she loves, and that scares me. I fear that she will put herself in a place that we cannot come back from.

I sit back in my seat and the silence returns.
